Brutally Cold Day
Well, we finally have cold temperatures. In fact, the temps. are brutally cold. Our Greyhounds (and us) are going to have to be satisfied with just quick trips outdoors for potty breaks (for the hounds) and firewood gathering for us. The wood stove is going to have a hard time keep up with the cold today!

Then, the sky to the west.
And, finally the sky to the north.
Here is the house. We only have a few inches of snow on the ground at the moment, but it should start accumulating if the temperature stays below freezing for the foreseeable future.

Maine Mineral and Gem Museum
Sorta sister, Shannon, took me to the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum, in Bethel, for my birthday. At the moment, the museum is very small, but shortly (in 2018) it will house the finest collection of Maine minerals and gems. The new facility will become a research facility, museum, educational facility, and I can't wait!
Here you see me posed with a big beryl boulder just outside the museum door. I couldn't take any photos inside the museum if I was going to post them online, so you'll have to go there yourself to see what's inside (although I did take a few photos of meteorites as they have a fabulous collection!) Here is some information about beryl from Geology.com.

Beryl is a mineral that contains a significant amount of beryllium. Beryllium is a very rare metal, and that limits the occurrence of beryl to a few geological situations where beryllium is present in sufficient amounts to form minerals. It mainly occurs in granite, rhyolite, and granite pegmatites; in metamorphic rocks associated with pegmatites; and, in veins and cavities where hydrothermal activity is associated with rocks of granitic composition. These different types of deposits are often found together and serve as an exploration model for finding beryl.Beryl is also found where carbonaceous shale, limestone, and marble have been acted upon by regional metamorphism. The famous emerald deposits of Colombia and Zambia have been formed under these conditions. The carbonaceous material is thought to provide the chromium or vanadium needed to color the emerald.

Magical Birthday Card
I got the best ever birthday card today. Shannon and Billy gave me this Quilling Card. It is the art of rolling and coiling small strips of paper to create patterns. It dates back to Egyptian times. The art got its name due to the use of bird's quills to coil the paper upon. This is so stunning! And, I do love birds;-) Go to QuillingCard.com for lots of gorgeous greeting cards.

Snow Storm Total
We got 6" of snow from this storm. The first snow plow of the season went by, as did the sand truck. Then, the daytime temp rose above freezing.
Here is the next week's weather. We are in for a mess on Tuesday, if that storm pans out. We should get between 3-5 inches of snow mixed with rain. Absolute UGH to that storm. We had so much mixed precipitation last year that it was almost a bust snow-wise with tons of ice. It looks like this is the weather future for us this year as well. By the way, this is a weak La Nina year.
