I chose the 3 largest of the bulbs of garlic, with the largest cloves, and planted 21 cloves in my garlic bed. Before planting the cloves, I refreshed the soil with some compost and some humus. The cloves were planted 4" deep, then covered with soil. We then raked two piles of leaves which Drew then mulched and put on top of the soil. This is weighted down with wire fencing to hold it all in place throughout the winter. The leaves then become part of the soil for summer.
Yay! We did not have but a sprinkle of moisture falling out of the sky today! And, there were peeks of sunshine periodically throughout the day. It was a good day to start planting vegetable seeds.I planted kohlrabi seeds into two 15 gallon grow bags. The carrots and arat parsley root are all in taller, skinny bags to accommodate their long tap roots. I have the Arat Parsley Root seeds soaking overnight in water so as to help them sprout. I will plant them in their prepared cloth bag tomorrow.The garlic plants are looking great!!! My garlic bed is tiny, but mighty!
I planted the cloves from three bulbs of garlic in early November and covered them with leaves. Drew uncovered the garlic bed this afternoon and found that 22 garlic shoots have broken through the soil. I am looking forward to cooking with the garlic scapes and then the bulbs themselves in several months!
